About 85 percent of Ethiopia's population is employed in agriculture, which makes up a large share - 41.6 percent - of total GDP. How the sector performs can have important implications on per capita incomes, employment, overall growth, poverty reduction, and food security. Ethiopia has been witnessing strong economic growth in recent years; the IMF projects a GDP growth rate of 7.5 percent for 2009. The agriculture sector has shared in these dramatic GDP growth rates, growing at rates above the CAADP 6 percent target (7.7 percent in 2008). In fact, the average agriculture GDP growth rate since 2000 has been 6.5 percent. However, climate change and global market shocks such as the recent oil and food price hikes will continue to pose major challenges for sustaining such outcomes.
