Administrator Shah is pleased to join Secretary Clinton in announcing the appointment of Ambassador William Garvelink, a 31–year veteran of USAID, as Deputy Coordinator for Development of the GHFSI.  In this role, Ambassador Garvelink will oversee the Initiative’s development program, working in close coordination with Ambassador Pat Haslach, who will serve as Deputy GHFSI Coordinator for Diplomacy.  Ambassador Garvelink will lead the Agency’s involvement in this $3.5 billion initiative, heading an impressive team of food security and development experts to be located in USAID’s Bureau for Economic Growth, Agriculture, and Trade.

A senior USAID Foreign Service Officer, Ambassador Garvelink most recently served as U.S. Ambassador to the Democratic Republic of the Congo.  His extensive career at USAID includes oversight of development and humanitarian work in Washington and around the world.  Ambassador Garvelink served as the Mission Director for Eritrea from 1999 to 2001, and as the Senior Deputy Assistant Administrator for the Bureau for Democracy, Conflict, and Humanitarian Assistance from 2001 to 2007.
