Over the weekend, the U.S. Department of State released its Congressional Budget Justification for Foreign Operations, which included revised funding figures for the Obama Administration’s Global Hunger and Food Security Initiative (GHFSI).

According to the 2009 UN Food and Agricultural Organization’s annual report, over one billion people are undernourished worldwide.  In addition to the onset of the global economic crisis, other factors such as rising food prices, lower income, and an increase in unemployment have contributed to the rise in hunger.

 

What are the top research questions facing agriculture? Earlier this year,
the American Society of Agronomy (ASA) sought out the opinions of its
members and leadership to develop a Grand Challenge statement, key
questions, and expected outcomes.

 

Preference programs provide unilateral market access to developing countries and are seen as central to U.S. trade and development policy, as well as an important foreign policy tool.  Over the years, Congress has maintained active oversight of these programs, repeatedly revising and expanding them to better meet the goal of spurring economic growth and development.
