Appointment of the Deputy Coordinator for Development of the Global Hunger and Food Security Initiative

Administrator Shah is pleased to join Secretary Clinton in announcing the appointment of Ambassador William Garvelink, a 31–year veteran of USAID, as Deputy Coordinator for Development of the GHFSI.  In this role, Ambassador Garvelink will oversee the Initiative’s development program, working in close coordination with Ambassador Pat Haslach, who will serve as Deputy GHFSI Coordinator for Diplomacy.  Ambassador Garvelink will lead the Agency’s involvement in this $3.5 billion initiative, heading an impressive team of food security and development experts to be located in USAID’s Bureau for Economic Growth, Agriculture, and Trade.

Amidst the ongoing aid reform debate in Washington, President Obama has launched the Global Hunger and Food Security Initiative (GHFSI), a bold vision for making US foreign aid a better tool for helping people feed themselves. In Congress, Senators Lugar and Casey have introduced the Global Food Security Act (S.384) to implement the President's strategy.

APLU Announces Appointment of Kathie L. Olsen as Vice President of International Programs

Peter McPherson, President, APLU announced this morning the appointment of Kathie L. Olsen, Ph.D., as Vice President, International Programs, effective May 3, 2010.  Olsen is the former deputy director and chief operating officer at the National Science Foundation (NSF) and chief scientist at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).  Formal announcement of Kathie Olsen’s appointment will be made this afternoon with distribution of a news release and an announcement on the A۰P۰L۰U website.

The Partnership is now accepting applications for Summer 2010 Interns

The Partnership is seeking full and part-time interns for summer 2010 with a strong interest in international development, particularly in the agricultural development of Africa, or a strong desire to learn more about these issues.  This internship will require a minimum of 10 hours/week and will take place at the Partnership's office at Capitol South.
